France’s Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA), the country’s defence procurement agency, has taken delivery of the development aircraft and the first two Falcon 2000LXS Albatros aircraft under the AVSIMAR maritime surveillance and intervention programme.

Launched in 2020, the AVSIMAR programme calls for a total of 12 Falcon 2000 Albatros aircraft to be delivered by 2031. Dassault Aviation said the delivery marks an important step in strengthening France’s maritime surveillance and intervention capabilities.

Based on the Falcon 2000LXS, the Albatros has been designed to perform a wide range of missions over France’s extensive maritime areas. The aircraft features a multifunction radar, high-performance optronic turret, observation windows, a Search and Rescue (SAR) system, and dedicated communications equipment.

The Falcon 2000 Albatros offers a range of approximately 7,400 km, combined with high cruise speed and strong low-speed handling characteristics. These capabilities allow the aircraft to cover large maritime areas while providing the ability to respond rapidly to incidents at significant distances from its operating base.

Built for Maritime Surveillance and Security

The aircraft will support a range of missions, including maritime surveillance, search and rescue, border monitoring, fisheries enforcement, pollution detection, anti-trafficking operations and surveillance of France’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

The Albatros programme brings together several major French aerospace and defence companies. Dassault Aviation is leading the aircraft development in cooperation with Naval Group, Safran and Thales.

Flight testing has been conducted at Dassault Aviation’s flight-test centre in Istres, while aircraft conversion work is being carried out at the company’s Mérignac facility.

Dassault Aviation Chairman and CEO Éric Trappier highlighted the company’s long experience in maritime surveillance aircraft, pointing to previous Falcon platforms operated by organisations including the U.S. Coast Guard, Japanese Coast Guard and French Navy.

According to Dassault Aviation, these aircraft have demonstrated their value in missions ranging from maritime security and sovereignty protection to search and rescue, medical evacuation and enforcement activities at sea.

Expanding France’s Maritime Surveillance Capability

France operates one of the world’s largest maritime domains, making long-range surveillance and rapid intervention important elements of its national maritime security strategy. The Falcon 2000 Albatros is intended to provide a flexible platform capable of performing multiple missions from a single aircraft.

Dassault Aviation also brings extensive experience in dedicated maritime patrol aircraft. Its earlier Atlantic and Atlantique 2 platforms have served with the French Navy, including missions associated with the protection of France’s strategic nuclear submarine force.

The recently delivered Atlantique 2 Standard 6 has further strengthened France’s maritime patrol capabilities, while the Falcon 2000 Albatros adds a complementary platform focused on maritime surveillance, intervention and state-action missions.

The delivery of the first two aircraft represents a significant milestone for the AVSIMAR programme and marks the beginning of the operational introduction of a new generation of French maritime surveillance aircraft.
