TEKEVER, a pan-European technology company specialising in artificial intelligence-based autonomous systems, has signed a contract with the Portuguese Air Force to provide access to the autonomous capabilities of its AR5 system for surveillance missions. The contract also includes operator training, a Ground Control Station and the ATLAS mission system.
The agreement represents a step toward strengthening the Portuguese Air Force’s operational capabilities and modernising its air assets. Delivery of the systems and achievement of initial operational capability are scheduled for September.
The AR5 system will support the Portuguese Air Force in conducting long-range missions, including maritime surveillance, security and defence operations, monitoring of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and a range of public interest missions.
These missions will include support for the Special Rural Firefighting Unit (DECIR), coastal security and environmental protection. The system is intended to provide the Portuguese Air Force with an autonomous capability for missions covering a range of surveillance and security requirements.
TEKEVER will also implement a knowledge transfer and training programme to support the Portuguese Air Force in operating the new capability. Initial training for Air Force personnel is scheduled to be completed in September alongside system deliveries, followed by a second phase of training in October aimed at consolidating operational readiness and developing additional skills among operational teams.
Tenente-Coronel Luís Henriques, Operational Coordinator of the Portuguese Air Force’s AR5 Working Group, said the integration of the AR5 system would enhance the service’s operational capabilities. He highlighted the platform’s range, endurance and operational flexibility, as well as its role in monitoring Portugal’s Exclusive Economic Zone and supporting public interest missions.
Pedro Petiz, Director of Strategic Development at TEKEVER, said the contract would bring an autonomous capability developed and produced in Portugal into service for protecting the country’s airspace and maritime territory. He also said TEKEVER would work with the Portuguese Air Force to develop its operational capability and strengthen national autonomy, readiness and response capacity.
