Italy and Greece have signed an Implementing Arrangement in Rome covering the transfer of two FREMM frigates from the Italian Navy to the Hellenic Navy through Fincantieri.
The vessels, Carlo Bergamini and Virginio Fasan, are currently in service with the Italian Navy and will be transferred to Greece under the new agreement.
The agreement was signed by the General Directorate of Defence Investments and Armaments (GDDIA) of Greece’s Ministry of National Defence and Italy’s General Directorate for Armaments. The signing was attended by Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias and the Chiefs of the Italian and Hellenic Navies, Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto and Admiral Dimitrios-Eleftherios Kataras.
Fincantieri was represented by Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Pierroberto Folgiero and Eugenio Santagata, General Manager of the Naval Vessels Division.
Fincantieri to Support Transfer and Lifecycle Operations
The Implementing Arrangement follows the Memorandum of Cooperation and Declaration of Intent signed in September 2025, further developing defence and industrial cooperation between Italy and Greece.
Under the agreement, Fincantieri will play a leading role in transferring the two frigates and providing support throughout their operational lifecycle.
The agreement covers the transfer of the vessels, initial and long-term support activities required to maintain their operational readiness, as well as the participation of Greek industry in maintenance activities and the integration of new systems aboard the frigates.
The arrangement also provides opportunities for increased industrial cooperation between Fincantieri and Greek companies.
FREMM Frigates for the Hellenic Navy
The two frigates were designed and built by Fincantieri for the Italian Navy and represent the company’s naval shipbuilding and technological capabilities.
According to Fincantieri, the transfer demonstrates the adaptability and flexibility of the FREMM platform, while also supporting continuity in naval operations and long-term international cooperation.
The company sees the agreement as an opportunity to develop further industrial cooperation with Greece and create additional opportunities across the supply chain.
Folgiero said the transfer process could generate new industrial synergies between Fincantieri and Greece’s industrial ecosystem.
He also highlighted the potential for greater integration of expertise, technologies and industrial capabilities among countries operating the FREMM platform, including knowledge sharing and further technological development.
